MOUNT ATHOS

Lying on a slim finger of land stretching south from the Greek mainland, Mount Athos is a religious center maintained by Orthodox monks for over 1,000 years, and has been following Byzantine traditions. There are around 20 monasteries and are only male monks, only men can enter and visit mount Athos. Monks day and night is divided into three hours periods. Eight hours of praying, eight hours of resting, and eight hours of working.

BUDDHIST MONKS

Thero is an honorific term for senior Buddhist monks in the monastery order. The word means “ elder “. In Buddhism shaving your head and face is a part of Pabbajja. Pappaja is when a person leaves their home and goes forth to live the life of a Buddhist renunciate among ordained monks.

HINDU MONKS / North Kamalabari Satra

North Kamalabari Satra is located at Majouli in the state of Assam-India. Majouli is the biggest river island in the world. The island has 22 Hindu Monasteries which are called Satras. At 5 years of age, each second boy from every family, enters the monastery and becomes monk. Entrusted by parents, the new young monks attend school and then higher education in colleges. At the age of 18 they can choose to be civilians or continue the monk life
